How to Keep Your Babies and Toddlers Safe from Mosquitoes During Summer Months

Summer is a season filled with opportunities for outdoor fun and adventure. We enjoy memorable moments by the swimming pool, in our backyards, parks, gardens, or while camping, hiking, fishing, and climbing...etc. However, it's also a time when mosquitoes are out in full force. Mosquitoes can be a nuisance, causing itchy bites, and in some cases, transmitting diseases such as West Nile virus. For little kids, due to their higher metabolic rates and body temperatures compared to adults, tend to be more attractive to mosquitoes. Therefore, For parents with little kids, mosquito safety is very important. Here are some tips that can be taken to protect your young children from mosquito bites during the summer months.

(1) Use Mosquito Repellent
One of the most effective ways to protect against mosquito bites is to use mosquito repellent. Look for a repellent that is specifically formulated for children and follow the instructions carefully. Choose a product that contains DEET, picaridin, or IR3535, as these are the most effective ingredients for repelling mosquitoes. Be sure to apply the repellent to all exposed skin, but avoid applying it to children's hands, as they may put their hands in their mouth.

(2) Dress Your Child in Protective Clothing
Another way to protect against mosquito bites is to dress your child in protective clothing. Choose lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants that cover as much skin as possible. Light-colored clothing is also recommended, as mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors. Additionally, consider purchasing clothing that is treated with insecticide for added protection.

General speaking, Clothing that is treated with insecticide is considered safe for children, as long as it is used according to the manufacturer's instructions. The most common type of insecticide used on clothing is permethrin, which is a synthetic version of a naturally occurring insecticide found in chrysanthemums. When used properly, permethrin-treated clothing can provide effective protection against a variety of insects, including mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas.

However, it is important to note that permethrin-treated clothing should not be applied directly to the skin, and parents should avoid spraying permethrin onto their child's skin or near their face. Additionally, parents should be sure to wash permethrin-treated clothing separately from other laundry and follow the manufacturer's instructions for washing and care.

(3) Avoid Peak Mosquito Hours
Mosquitoes are most active during dawn and dusk, so it's important to avoid outdoor activities during these peak mosquito hours. Plan outdoor activities for the morning or early afternoon when mosquito activity is lower. If you do need to be outdoors during peak mosquito hours, use extra precautions such as wearing protective clothing and using mosquito repellent.

(4) Eliminate Standing Water
Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, so it's important to eliminate any standing water around your home or yard. Empty out any containers that may collect water, such as buckets, toys, and planters. Keep gutters clean and free of debris, and ensure that outdoor furniture is not collecting water. By eliminating standing water, you can reduce the mosquito population around your home and protect your children from mosquito bites.

(5) Use a Full Bugs Proof Playpen

A full bugs proof playpen provides a secure, enclosed space that keeps mosquitoes and other insects out, while still allowing your little sweeties to play and explore in a safe environment.
